"SYNAXIS". Greek Art 1450-2000. Icons on Wood and Paper

The mutual approach and understanding between peoples who share spiritual and cultural roots is, without a doubt, one of the main goals of our era.
It is towards the achievement of this common goal that the efforts of the Benaki Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, and the Andrei Rublev Museum of Ancient Culture and Art focus on as they present the Exhibition ``SYNAXIS`. Greek Art 1450 - 2000. Icons on Wood and Paper`.
The Byzantine tradition contains within it the beginning of the cultural thread connecting Christian Orthodox peoples. After the fall of Constantinople in the 15th century, Russia`s cultural contacts with Greece and the Orthodox East are reflected in the invitation of well-known iconographers to Moscow. Hundreds of Greek icons travelled to the capital of Russia during the 15th and 16th centuries. These icons were not only loved and honoured by the faithful, but also diversified the Russian school of iconography and familiarised it with new aesthetic and stylistic techniques. The importance of these prototype works is unique. Thanks to the post-Byzantine influence, the Russian artists were introduced to the painting style of the west of Europe and were able to combine it with iconographic elements.
I am convinced that the icons on display at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts will deeply touch all the visitors without exception.

Η έκθεση περιλαμβάνει 135 θρησκευτικά έργα σε ξύλο και χαρτί που χρονολογούνται από τον 15ο έως τον 20ο αιώνα και προέρχονται, στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος τους, από δύο σημαντικές ελληνικές συλλογές : τη Συλλογή Βελιμέζη και τη Συλλογή Μαργαρίτη. Είναι η πρώτη φορά που ένας τόσο μεγάλος αριθμός ελληνικών έργων θα παρουσιαστεί στη Ρωσία.
Η έκθεση αποτελεί `πρελούδιο` των εκδηλώσεων που θα πραγματοποιηθούν στο πλαίσιο του εορτασμού του Έτους Πολιτισμού ΡΩΣΙΑ-ΕΛΛΑΣ 2014.
